FAQ's
+ What does ‘Gewürzhaus’ mean?
Gewürzhaus is the German word for ‘spice house’.
+ How has the family’s history influenced Gewürzhaus?
The kitchen has always been a gathering point in the lives of Eva and Maria, both passionate cooks and bakers. Several of the blended products have been inspired by, and named in honour of their Oma; specifically Oma’s Nut Sugar and Oma Rosa’s Gulasch. And, the old German script that is used for the Gewürzhaus logo is taken from handwritten letters from the sisters’ grandfather.
+ How many different herbs, spices, salts and sugars are available at Gewürzhaus?
There are more than 300 different kinds of products in the shop. That breaks down to approximately 120 blends, 200 pure herbs and spices, 25 salts and 15 different types of sugars.
+ I cannot find a product. Can Gewürzhaus source it for me?
Although we stock one of the most extensive ranges of spices in Australia, there is the occasional product, which we do not yet have. Let us know! Gewürzhaus will endeavour to find it for you.

Again, read our Spice Care instructions for handy tips.
+ Where do all of the spices come from?
The various herbs and spices are imported from every region of the world, with each coming from their authentic land of origin. The blends, however, are milled and mixed freshly at Gewürzhaus.
+ How often are the items milled?
The whole spices are ground on-site as needed, which on average, is once per week. Fresh grinding is very important, as the quality and shelf life of the products are greatly extended.

You can lift the lids of the spice containers, smell and see the products before you scoop your desired quantity into specially crafted and labelled spice bags. Great fun!
+ Can I take Gewürzhaus products interstate?
Yes, you can. There are no quarantine restrictions or problems with taking commercially prepared herbs or spices into other parts of Australia, whether by vehicle, air or post. Read more here.
+ Is Gewürzhaus the first of its kind in Australia?
Yes, we believe we offer the vastest range of products in a self-scoop format. Gewürzhaus’ other point of difference is its on-site milling of whole spices. The majority of shops selling spices in Australia (including ethnic shops) sell products that have been milled off-shore, resulting in months passing before they reach local shelves.

Gewürzhaus is located in Carlton at 342 Lygon Street, near the corner of Faraday Street. We also have a store in Hawksburn Village at 543 Malvern Rd, Toorak.
